Migrant Food Progam
The Food Bank delivers food, blankets, clothing, books, health care items monthly, and occasionally toys. Seasonally, as many as 140 field workers are employed on the farms with around 300 children. 50 families work full-time on the same farm and most of those younger children attend a small school 15 miles away on dirt roads. All migrant workers are dedicated to seeing their younger children have an education if possible.
But school days are numbered as the kids begin working in the fields with their parents as young teens. Field workers work long days, usually 10 hours a day, 6 days a week providing the food we eat. They earn about 15 dollars a day. Although housing is provided, it is without heat, running water, and minimal living conditions, and it gets quite cold in the winter.
During rainy weather, they are isolated with camps being up to 15 miles from anything and the dirt roads impassable. This is a major challenge to our ability to provide food
The family structure is paramount and evident, with older kids caring for the younger ones as the parents work in the fields. The pay is low, the housing is very poor, and the hours are long, but they work hard to provide for their families. There is very little interest in leaving Mexico for any other location, this is their home no matter how basic.
The cost of this program is around 1500.00 USD monthly just for food. Blankets are over 1000.00 annually Most healthy care items are donated as are toys, books and clothing.
